Dirt and a Shovel

This past weekend we spent a lot of time fixing up our flowerbeds and planting a few new things. And by we, I mean mostly my husband. I did eventually go outside and help after I felt guilty he got started. We planted hibiscus and knock out roses. I've never enjoyed gardening or planting or anything of that sort, but I'll be honest...it was kind of "satisfying" to sit back and look at what we had done. Again, mostly what my hubby had done. Hey, I did water them! And pull out a few weeds.

The beginning stages.

Time to put out the mulch.

I finally made my appearance. It was SO bright.

After...so pretty.

Hardworking hubby.
Now we are absolutely addicted to going outside to look at everything and see if anything has bloomed. Literally every time we go outside we both hurry over to the plants first. We can't wait for everything to grow and start to look pretty. Is that an indicator of when you are old and uncool? Waiting on your plants to grow? Well, we are there. : )

Now I need some tips. How do we keep these pretty things alive??

I am not one to give you advice on gardening. I have a black thumb, and I have no desire to do anything outside that requires me to get dirty and possibly come in contact with bugs or worms. :)

You are not old and uncool at all, just a proud homeowner!! Water them every evening, once the sun has died down a bit or early in the morning, not mid-day when the sun can "fry" them. Roses go through a phase after you plant them where you will think they are dying: don't worry, they are not. Just keep watering them!! And have fun!!

It turned out great - thumbs up for both you and the hubs! We just moved into a place with a yard and a garden, can't wait to add some pretty plants too :)

Looks beautiful! Could you impart some of your green thumb on me? I can't seem to be very good at these kinds of things (that's why the hubby does it... lol)!

So exciting!! We have a little flower garden at the front of our home too! We are always walking out to see what has bloomed!

Beautiful! If we could, I would love to take out all of the bushes we have and put in roses. But since we're moving next year, it wouldn't be worth it!

You are soooo like me. I just stare at my husband when he works in the lawn. Then I feel guilty and "help" towards the end.

hahahaaha!

Haha, I make my husband dig all of the holes for new plants, then I totally take credit.

Love it! :) We're starting our gardening the weekend after next! I'm so excited haha!

Gardening is so fun! And hey, at least you weren't sitting inside or out and about while he was working on it - you participated ;-)

I always get tired of watering by June - my advice: invest in a sprinkler! It's much easier to turn on the sprinkler and go inside than it is to stand outside for 30 minutes getting eaten up by mosquitoes!

So pretty! Look how much life the color added to your yard! How to keep them alive? Remember they're there and water them :)

I love working outside in flower beds and gardens. So if you're old, I'm right there with you. Haha. But I totally think it's cool either way! I'm doing the same thing with some peonies I planted and some grass seed I scattered.

It looks great!

I was just saying to my mom that we need to take our annual trip to buy our flowers. They're a pain in the neck to plant and water but give the house a little life. My husband and I take garden walks too. I think it is a sign that we are old and lame. I'm surprisingly cool with it!

Looks great! We redid our flower beds about a month ago and even though it was a ton of work, it was so worth it!

I can't wait to have a house to start doing things like this. Although I do not have a green thumb AT ALL! So like you, I'll probably do a lot of watching but help with the watering! lol It looks very pretty! :) I especially love the hibiscus plants! Good job!

Your flowers look so pretty. My husband and I recently moved into a new house, and we need to plant some flowers too. I'm scared because I once killed a cactus! :(

it looks great! those knock-out roses will get SOOOO big! we just planted 4 new ones to line the side of our house and I can't wait until they grow some more...you never know, you may have a green thumb hiding somewhere in there!

You are going to love the hibiscus & the knock outs! Once they're established you literally don't have to do a thing to them. At least I don't & mine are HUGE! My Hibiscus come back every year too. I cut them down to a couple of inches off of the ground & they come back great. Watch out because gardening is addictive!

I love looking at freshly landscaped lawns! You're going to have some gorgeous flowers :)

you are a far better woman than I.

Laziness has been winning, lately. And I kind of like it.

Love your new flowers!! We've gotta do some of this real soon, too!! :)

Haha I'm the same way with planting. I always feel bad watching Drew so I go out and "help." Your hard work looks like it paid off...looks great!

you did such an awesome sauce of a job Meg! I hate gardening with a passion, but our yard is crying for some much needed TLC. I need to get myself some motivation I guess.

I love it!!! The front of our house is so bare we need to do something but I am so indecisive! Props to you for even going out there! I hate hate hate hate the smell of mulch. gag me. that & asphalt. So I tend to do my very best to avoid it. Also that same trailer is sitting in my driveway. Just saying.

Ooooo pretty pretty landscaping!! Nate and I both refuse to have landscaping, because we both don't want to constantly clean it up!

Looks beautiful!! Make sure you water them regularly as they start their roots, you'll have to water the container more often since it dries out faster. Miracle Grow also makes fertilizer granuals (like sprinkles) that you just add more when they disappear that always make a huge difference. Good luck!

Megan said...

Everything looks so pretty! Ya'll did a great job. I use the Miracle
Grow singles packets once a month on my flowers at home and it seems to keep them growing :)

Ha ha ha! I totally am right there with you. We have done one bed out of a few and we're obsessed with watching progress. Which is kind of good motivation for planting the next ones I guess! My husband does most of the work, too!

Also, THANK YOU sweet friend for the card. It totally made my day. You rock.

Oooh looks great! Just in time for spring/summer :) I wish I could give you some advice, but I'd kill a fake plant if I had one. Haha!

I am not a gardener AT ALL. I once put an ad on craigslist for anyone to come and pull weeds for me after spending 2 hours on a 12inx6in corner.

My allergies were horrendous, my knees were screaming...and I said, the heck with this, I'd rather pay someone.

And I did. haha Thank goodness you have a hubby to do the majority of the work..and you don't even have to pay him!!..well, monetarily speaking of course.

It looks great! I'm not much of a gardener at all! Keep up the good work (or supervising) :)

Haha! I'm with you! We planted our first garden this year and we get SO excited every time we see something pop up out of the ground. :)

Fran said...

Well, I'm with you. We just planted some herbs in a planter because we're tired of spending so much money on spices and every time we let our dogs out, we go check our planter at the edge of the deck haha

Beth Ann said...

Looks nice! Funny...I'm the same way. I go out with the good intention of helping but I end up sitting on the porch because well...I don't know what to do or how to do anything and it's like...hard work and stuff. ;)

Holly said...

I know nothing about gardening, but the flowers are pretty! :)

Too funny about running over to look at them every time you go outside! I think I would do that too, possibly several times a day. :P

Katie said...

Ahh I love it! Oh man, I want a yard!

Lisa @ MMT said...

It looks great! Your hubby did a great job, well you too ;) we are going to start gardening around our home soon too. It does feel like an old uncool thing to do lol. I often wonder when we got old, cause we sure don't look like it ;)

I so wish I had a green thumb - this is going to be so pretty all bloomed!

Knock Out Roses are super easy to take care of! We have several bushes in our backyard. I just cut them back when they get lanky and our sprinkler system waters them. They grow like crazy and the pink flowers are so pretty!
